Deep Drawn Components

Deep drawn presswork is by no means a simple process. Typically, deep drawing is considered as when the depth of the drawn parts exceeds its diameter. This depth is attained by redrawing the component through a series of dies until the finished product resembles a mould or cup-like shape. This process is known as reduction.

Deep drawn products are often used for storage, such as canisters, tins and filter bodies, but the process does not have to be restricted to such small productions. The deep drawing process can extend into the medical industry, automotive production and many other large industrial sectors that require deep drawn metal components.

Deep drawn pressing also allows more complex shapes to be created, providing seamless production out of one sheet of metal, and can successfully produce symmetrical or asymmetrical shapes. Components can also be partially deep drawn to create a series of diameters throughout the component.

The process can be complicated by several factors, one of which may be that the exact desired size of the component is not formed after the first reduction. In this case, the product will have to undergo multiple reduction cycles until the correct size is achieved.

Another possible complication may be the material used. While most types of materials are suitable for being deep drawn from a flat sheet into a shape, some metals have been found to not be as malleable as others, which can result in a heat treatment operation (known as annealing) being required before any further reductions can be attempted. Our expert engineers can offer sound advice on the deep drawing process to ensure it is the right solution for you.
